This isn't exactly related, but today in 2001, a guy named Larry Silverstein signed a 99-year lease on the World Trade Center, which essentially means he owned it without actually having to buy it. The whole thing. Just a few months later, it was destroyed.
He's gotten billions of dollars in insurance payout. And gets to rebuild it however he wants. Weird, huh? I'm sure there are lots of conspiracy theories about that! Here are a couple of links about it: Larry Silverstein
