hawk ID anyone?

this guy was hunting, in the rain, in our backyard yesterday. Caught some sort of mouse-like creature in the neighbor's yard. He has black and white stripes on his tail and on the ends of his wings. He has a dark mask on his face, and a bright orangey-red chest.

methinks he is a Broad-winged hawk. need to look for more photos before I know for sure. He did not have any stripes or barring on his underside, it was a very bright rusty color, solid.

my bet is still on the broad-winged hawk, though I cannot find a photo of one online that looks quite like this guy (or gal).

you can click the picture for a larger image to see him better.

I don't know the hawks in your neighborhood, but age can make a difference in the way they look.

A beautiful gift, a raptor in your back yard!

and a nest in my front yard!! I think it's just a feeding platform (no babies), for the red-tailed hawk that often hunts in the neighborhood.

The red-shouldered hawks made their nest in the next door neighbor's yard, in the tallest pine tree at the top of the hill. The babies pooped all over neighbor's truck, he had to stop parking it in his driveway until they left the nest. :-)
