glutenized!

It's mostly over by now, but my oldest child and I had a definite gluten reaction a few days ago. Not sure what caused it. Certainly it was cross-contamination, but from what? I've been purchasing nuts from the bulk bins at the health food store all along and have never had this issue before, but that is the top suspect and I'll have to get jarred/canned nuts from now on. Bleh! They just aren't as good as those "organic free trade" high dollar nuts, but we can't afford the extra expense right now anyway. I originally suspected the taco shells (we get the Food Lion brand, had a reaction to the name brand ones every time), but DH reminded me that I was cranky and crazy before we ate those tacos. I have managed to cut our grocery bill by more than half!! And perhaps I got something that wasn't quite okay for us to eat in the process. I really don't know.

You see, that's the sort of food intolerance I can understand - clearly something painful going on in that poor face *hug*

it's the blind uncontrollable rage that is the real problem for us after eating the tiniest trace amounts of gluten. I was 36 years old before I realized the world doesn't really suck, that my anger came from within.

is it possible they moved the bins ? ie put the nuts etc into a bin that used to have a gluten product in it ?

**hugs**

that's the thing, there's no way of knowing... food in the bulk bins is highly susceptible to cross-contamination, especially when there are gluteny foods in other bins nearby (pasta, granola, and such). I thought the nuts were okay, since they don't have a scoop in them that could be put in another bin containing gluten...

Aww...poor baby! It just sucks, doesn't it? My kids got some gluten last week. I still haven't figured out how or where, but it's just so obvious. It made for quite a bit of ugliness. My eldest is still a little over emotional, but thankfully the worst seems to be past.

That looks terrible! Sorry to hear about it. Too bad there's no Trader Joe's nearby, they have raw nuts in plastic sealed bags. And they are cheaper than most health food stores. They have one in Atlanta, but that's too far.

How have you cut your grocery bills? Just by not buying organic?

nah, I never did buy that much organic to begin with. I get as much as I possibly can from Food Lion, and then shop their sale (MVP) items or get generics. We aren't eating steak every week, and when we do, it's not ribeye. Stuff like that...
